Glyphosate, the active ingredient in commonly used herbicides, has been at the center of debate concerning its potential impact on human health. What is Glyphosate?

Human exposure to glyphosate mainly occurs through residues in food and water. Glyphosate has been detected in various food items, including grains, fruits, and vegetables. Additionally, non-agricultural uses, such as lawn applications, may contribute to exposure in residential areas.2 Once ingested, glyphosate is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and traces of the herbicide can be detected in the bloodstream and urine shortly after exposure.3
Impact on the Microbiota
Emerging research suggests that glyphosate may disrupt the composition of the gut microbiota, leading to an imbalance of gut bacteria or dysbiosis. Dysbiosis has been associated with various chronic gastrointestinal conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome.1 Glyphosate may also induce antibiotic resistance, a growing concern in the medical community.4
Impact on the Gut Lining
Oral ingestion of glyphosate may disrupt the tight junctions between intestinal cells, which regulate the permeability of the gut lining.5 When these junctions are compromised, larger molecules, bacteria, and toxins may enter the bloodstream, further contributing to inflammation and increasing the risk of autoimmune reactions and other health issues.
Reducing Glyphosate Exposure
Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to reduce your overall exposure to glyphosate. Choosing organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible can lower your exposure to glyphosate, as can selecting products with a “glyphosate residue free” certification. Using filtered drinking water is also essential. Remove your shoes when you enter the home, and avoid using herbicides on your lawn or garden.
